Mesa Verde National Park

February 03, 2020

Located southwest of Colorado, Mesa Verde National Park is known for its cliff dwellings. The most amazing part of these dwellings is their location, which is right underneath the overhanging cliffs. These cliff dwellings were inhabited by Pueblo people formerly known as the Anasazi since 590 A.D..

Migration from Mesa Verde to New Mexico & Arizona didn't begin until the late 1270s, which means the dwellings were inhabited for over 600 years. Corn was their main source of food and when the environment changed, it made growing corn very difficult.

Mesa Verde National Park wasn't established until 1906, Wilderness designated until 1976 and didn't become a World Heritage Site until 1978. In fact, last year alone over half a million visitors came from far and wide to see the park and its dwellings.
